The Brief History Of Kannywood
The nickname for Hausa language film is Kannywood. It is a component of the larger Nollywood Nigerian film industry, which also contains other production facilities making movies in numerous other Nigerian dialects.
Kano and Hollywood, the hub of the American film business, are combined to form the name “Kannywood.”
Sunusi Shehu of Tauraruwa Magazine coined the word “Kannywood” in the late 1990s, and it later became a well-known abbreviation for the sector in Northern Nigeria.
Three years prior to the introduction of the word “Nollywood,” the term “Kannywood” was first used in 1999.
From the 1960s RTV Kaduna and Radio Kaduna films, the Hausa language film industry gradually developed.
Drama productions that were popular with the Northern public were pioneered by seasoned actors like Kasimu Yero and Dalhatu Bawa.
The Hausa Comedy was first presented to the Northern public by Usman Baba Pategi and Mamman Ladan in the 1970s and 1980s.
In an effort to draw in more Hausa viewers who prefer Bollywood films, the Hausa language film industry underwent a significant transformation in the 1990s.
Kannywood, a cinematic fusion of Indian and Hausa culture, emerged and quickly rose to fame. Typically cited as the first Kannywood film to be commercially popular is Turmin Danya (“The Draw”) from 1990.
Others like Gimbiya Fatima In Da So Da Kauna, Munkar, Badakala, and Kiyarda Da Ni soon followed it. Popular new actors like Ibrahim Mandawari and Hauwa Ali Dodo helped pave the way for later super-star-caliber female performers to come on the scene.
The Kano State Filmmakers Association had more than 2000 registered film businesses as of 2012.
In 2001, Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso transformed a local censorship group established by Kanywood Producers and Marketers into a board and gave it the name Kano State Censorship Board.
The board’s initial Executive Secretary was Mr. Dahiru Beli.
Among the lyricists and singers who create or perform the music in Hausa movies are Nazifi Asnanic, Naziru M Ahmad, Ali Jita, Fati Nijar, Nazifi Asnanic and Umar M. Sharif.
